Russian woman is being sued by the U.S. for a puppy she threw out a window

The Russian woman’s lawyer said that the incident occurred in September 2014, preliminary hearings are underway, and the prosecutor’s office is likely to push for the maximum punishment – imprisonment of up to four years.

NEW YORK, January 16 – RIA Novosti, Ksenia Baigarova. New York resident Alsu Ivanchenko may get up to 4 years in prison for cruelty to animals: instead of treating a puppy sick with brain cancer or putting it to sleep, she wrapped it in a bag and threw it out of the car window, so the woman decided to save money.

Arkady Bukh, the Russian woman’s Lawyer Bukh told RIA Novosti on Friday that the incident took place in September 2014, preliminary hearings are underway, and prosecutors are likely to push for the maximum punishment – imprisonment of up to 4 years.

“The woman was given a Maltese bologna puppy, but the dog was acting a little unusual, it had a slow reaction time, and she took the dog to the vet. The vet said the dog had brain cancer and offered two options: either operate on the dog for five thousand dollars or put it to sleep for one,” the lawyer said.

According to him, none of the options did not suit Ivanchenko, and she preferred to throw a live 3-month-old puppy out of the car into the bushes, having previously wrapped it in a bag. However, the puppy was picked up and they tried to find the owner through social networks.

According to Buch, the group on social networks attracted the attention of a large number of animal advocates. The dog was named Charlotte, began to treat it for a fractured skull and a fractured paw. “Eventually, the very veterinarian who diagnosed the cancer got in touch with activists and gave the name of the bologna’s owner. Four days after the incident, she was arrested and then released on bail,” Bukh noted.

According to the lawyer, animal defenders put pressure on the judge and the prosecution, so it is possible that the court will go along with the protesters and sentence Ivanchenko to imprisonment. “Dozens of demonstrators come to every court session, they hold banners, calling to put Ivanchenko in jail,” Bukh said. He noted that due to the large number of demonstrators in the court were forced to take additional security measures.

The defender is convinced that imprisonment for Ivanchenko is an excessively strict punishment. “In some restaurants of oriental cuisine in California they serve dog meat, but no one is put in jail,” – emphasized Bukh.

The defender said that the next court session, at which Ivanchenko will appear, is scheduled for March.
