Vinnik, it was claimed, could be linked to a large cryptocurrency wallet containing around 80,000 bitcoins. Those funds were reportedly stolen in 2011 from the Japanese exchange Mt. Gox. Vinnik was arrested in 2017 in Greece with the support of the FBI before being extradited first to France and then to the US in 2022. U.S. authorities accuse him of involvement in money laundering through BTC-e, used, according to their version, by Russian criminal groups to finance cybercrime, drug trafficking and identity theft. More than four billion dollars has allegedly been laundered through the criminal scheme since 2010.
